Types of Numbers

Cardinal numbers are 'normal' numbers - 1,2,3 etc that tell you how many of something there are. Cardinal numbers 1 to 100 are listed below.

Ordinal numbers are numbers that tell you the position of something, first, second, third, fourth etc.

Notes on larger numbers

• In French, one hundred (cent) and one thousand (mille) drop the 'one' (un) in front.
  Example: The number 1100 in french is mille cent not un mille un cent.
  
  
• Other larger numbers are preceeded by one un,
  One Million is un million.
  One billion is un milliard.
  
  
• The spoken English shorthand of expressing a number by combining thousands and hundreds into a number,
  does not happen in French.
  Example: In English you might say the number 1500 as fifteen hundred.
  In French this will always be mille cinq cent = One thousand five hundred.
  
  
• The spoken English shorthand of expressing a number as two seperate numbers, especially referring to years,
  does not happen in French.
  Example: In English you might say the number 2024 as Twenty-Twenty Four.
  In French this will always be deux mille vingt-quatre = Two thousand Twenty Four.
  
  
• Spoken numbers in French do not insert the word 'and' (et) in the same way as spoken UK English numbers.
  Example: In UK English, you would say the number 2,005 as 'two thousand and five'.
  In French it would be deux mille cinq = 'two thousand five'.
  
  
• The word 'and' (et) is used in French with any numbers ending 21, 31, 41, 51 and 61 where the word 'and' (et) is placed before the number 1.
  Example: the number 3,041 is trois mille quarante-et-un.
  Similarly, where the numbers of thousands, millions or billions ends in 21, 31, 41, 51 or 61, et is also used.
  Example: the number 21,031,041 is vingt-et-un-million trente-et-un-mille quarante-et-un.

• Large numbers, as with English, are grouped into three figures but, unlike English, they are seperated by a space, or less commonly, by a full stop (period), but not a comma. 1,000,000 would be written in French as 1 000 000 or 1.000.000. The comma is used as the decimal seperator in French.
