What is a possessive adjective?
In English they are My / Your / His / Her / Our / Their / Its.
Possessive adjectives are used to indicate to what or to whom an object noun belongs.
Example: David [subject] started his [possessive adjective] car [object].
In some sentences the subject is implied by the possessive adjective:
Example: My [possessive adjective] pen [object] is blue.

In french, the possessive adjective has to agree with the gender of the object.

Masculine Examples

Mon père cultivait des tomates. My father grew tomatoes.
Tu es toujours en compétition avec ton frère. You are always in competition with your brother.
Tina a mis son manteau. Tina put on her coat.
Notre jardin est petit. Our garden is small.
Votre passeport, s'il vous plait. Your passport, please.
Savez-vous où se trouve leur bureau ? Do you know where their office is?

Feminine Examples

J'ai renversé du vin sur ma chemise. I have spilled wine on my shirt.
Est elle ta mere? Is she your mother?
Il a trois ans de moins que sa sœur. He is three years younger than his sister.
Notre voiture est rouge. Our car is red.
Quand votre licence expire-t-elle ? When does your licence expire?
Leur équipe a encore perdu ! Their team lost again!

Plural Examples

Mes parents sont allés à Paris. My parents went to Paris.
Tes cheveux sont beaux aujourd'hui. Your hair looks nice today.*
L'ours est apparu avec ses petits. The bear appeared with its cubs.
Nos meubles sont en bon état. Our furniture is in good condition.*
Vous devriez apprendre à vos enfants à nager. You should teach your children to swim.
Ont-ils terminé leurs devoirs ? Did They finish their homework? *

* Hair, furniture and homework are all plural in French
